Polybutylene pipe was going to be the pipe of the future. From the 1970s to the early 1990s polybutylene pipes were installed in homes and buildings as a low cost, light weight alternative to copper. In the 1980s problems began to surface with these new pipes.

The compounds used in the making of polybutylene pipes do not react well to long-term exposure of chemicals found in our water. The interior of the pipe begins to flake away which can lead to failure of the pipe. Without warning the pipe may split or develop leaks that can cause significant damage to structure. Due to the documented level of failures most plumbers recommend the replacement of polybutylene pipes.
